As it is nearly impossible to reduce PM2.5 concentrations in most cities to safe limits in a short period of time, dietary supplementation presents a promising approach for mitigating the adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure. A cross-sectional study showed that the elderly population of Linfen (PM2.5: 102 µg/m3) exhibited significantly lower serum taurine levels, as well as higher oxidative stress levels and cardiovascular health risks, than the corresponding population in Guangzhou (PM2.5: 39 µg/m3). We conducted a random double-blind study on aged mice that employed a "real-world" PM2.5 exposure system to simulate the conditions of Linfen with the aim of investigating the protective effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation on PM2.5-induced heart dysfunction. When compared with the placebo group, supplementation with taurine and fish oil not only maintained normal taurine levels, but also suppressed oxidative stress and inflammation in aged mice subjected to high concentrations of PM2.5. Variations in heart rate, contractile function, cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation and fibrosis among different groups of aged mice were used to clarify the beneficial effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation. Our results not only revealed the protective effects of taurine and fish oil supplementation on heart dysfunction induced by PM2.5 exposure from the aged mice experiments and also provided new means for the elderly to resist PM2.5 pollution at the individual level.

OBJECTIVE: Severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) is a highly morbid condition in general population as well as in solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) with different anticoagulation methods on the expression levels of cytokines in SAP. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with SAP, admitted into our hospital between September 2017 and July 2020, were enrolled as the research subjects and randomly divided into a control group (60 cases) and a study group (60 cases). CRRT with low molecular weight (LMW) heparin­calcium anticoagulation was conducted on patients in the control group, and CRRT with topical citrate + low-dose LMW heparin­calcium anticoagulation was conducted on patients in the study group. The expressions of cytokines in the two groups were compared after treatment. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in white blood cells (WBC), C-reactive proteins (CRP), and procalcitonin (PCT) before treatment between the two groups (P > 0.05). After treatment, the levels of WBC (P = 0.006), CRP (P < 0.001), and PCT (P < 0.001) were significantly lower in the study group when compared with those in the control group. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) between the two groups before treatment (P > 0.05). After treatment, the concentrations of IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α were significantly lower in the study group when compared with those in the control group. The APACHEII, SOFA and Ranson scores of the two groups were analyzed, and there was no difference between the two groups before treatment (P > 0.05). After treatment, the score of the study group was lower than that of the control group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: CRRT with topical citrate + low-dose LMW heparin­calcium anticoagulation in the treatment of patients with SAP reduces the levels of WBC, CRP, and PCT and the concentrations of cytokines, including IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α. This inhibits the release of inflammatory mediators in patients with SAP and reduces damage to the body caused by the inflammatory response, thus effectively improving the patients' condition.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the clinical treatment outcomes and the changes of the outcomes over time in extremely preterm twins in Guangdong Province, China. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for 269 pairs of extremely preterm twins with a gestational age of <28 weeks who were admitted to the department of neonatology in 26 grade A tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province from January 2008 to December 2017. According to the admission time, they were divided into two groups: 2008-2012 and 2013-2017. Besides, each pair of twins was divided into the heavier infant and the lighter infant subgroups according to birth weight. The perinatal data of mothers and hospitalization data of neonates were collected. The survival rate of twins and the incidence rate of complications were compared between the 2008-2012 and 2013-2017 groups. RESULTS: Compared with the 2008-2012 group, the 2013-2017 group (both the heavier infant and lighter infant subgroups) had lower incidence rates of severe asphyxia and smaller head circumference at birth (P<0.05). The mortality rates of both of the twins, the heavier infant of the twins, and the lighter infant of the twins were lower in the 2013-2017 group compared with the 2008-2012 group (P<0.05). Compared with the 2008-2012 group, the 2013-2017 group (both the heavier infant and lighter infant subgroups) had lower incidence rates of pulmonary hemorrhage, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), periventricular-intraventricular hemorrhage (P-IVH), and neonatal respiratory distress syndrome (NRDS) and a higher incidence rate of bronchopulmonary dysplasia (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: There is a significant increase in the survival rate over time in extremely preterm twins with a gestational age of <28 weeks in the 26 grade A tertiary hospitals in Guangdong Province. The incidences of severe asphyxia, pulmonary hemorrhage, PDA, P-IVH, and NRDS decrease in both the heavier and lighter infants of the twins, but the incidence of bronchopulmonary dysplasia increases. With the improvement of diagnosis and treatment, the multidisciplinary collaboration between different fields of fetal medicine including prenatal diagnosis, obstetrics, and neonatology is needed in the future to jointly develop management strategies for twin pregnancy.

Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a lymphoproliferative disorder lacking reliable therapies. PI3K pathway contributes to the pathogenesis of MCL, serving as a potential target. However, idelalisib, an FDA-approved drug targeting PI3Kδ, has shown intrinsic resistance in MCL treatment. Here we report that a p300/CBP inhibitor, A-485, could overcome resistance to idelalisib in MCL cells in vitro and in vivo. A-485 was discovered in a combinational drug screening from an epigenetic compound library containing 45 small molecule modulators. We found that A-485, the highly selective catalytic inhibitor of p300 and CBP, was the most potent compound that enhanced the sensitivity of MCL cell line Z-138 to idelalisib. Combination of A-485 and idelalisib remarkably decreased the viability of three MCL cell lines tested. Co-treatment with A-485 and idelalisib in Maver-1 and Z-138 MCL cell xenograft mice for 3 weeks dramatically suppressed the tumor growth by reversing the unsustained inhibition in PI3K downstream signaling. We further demonstrated that p300/CBP inhibition decreased histone acetylation at RTKs gene promoters and reduced transcriptional upregulation of RTKs, thereby inhibiting the downstream persistent activation of MAPK/ERK signaling, which also contributed to the pathogenesis of MCL. Therefore, additional inhibition of p300/CBP blocked MAPK/ERK signaling, which rendered maintaining activation to PI3K-mTOR downstream signals p-S6 and p-4E-BP1, thus leading to suppression of cell growth and tumor progression and eliminating the intrinsic resistance to idelalisib ultimately. Our results provide a promising combination therapy for MCL and highlight the potential use of epigenetic inhibitors targeting p300/CBP to reverse drug resistance in tumor.

PURPOSE: To assess the factors affecting selection of tracheostomy after mandibulectomy. METHODS: The clinical data of 165 patients who were divided into intubated group and tracheostomy group were collected from January 2008 to December 2012 in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital, including demographics, smoke habits, alcohol consumption, pulmonary disease, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) physical status classification, history of jaw operation, length of surgery, preoperative radiotherapy, free flap reconstruction, resection over the anterior midline, and radical neck dissection. The postoperative outcomes, such as the duration of keeping tube, the length of ICU stay, the length of hospital stay, and the number of complications and death were collected. Statistical analysis was performed using SAS version 9.2 software package. RESULTS: There were 81 patients in intubated group and 84 patients in tracheostomy group. Three factors that might be associated with selection of tracheostomy after mandibulectomy were preoperative radiotherapy (OR: 3.51, 95% CI: 1.34-9.20), free flap reconstruction (OR: 3.99, 95%CI: 1.84-8.65), and resection over the anterior midline of the jaw (OR: 20.08, 95%CI: 6.52-160.35)(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Tracheostomy was suitable for patients who received preoperative radiotherapy, free flap reconstruction and resection over the anterior midline after mandibular tumor resection were factors in considering of tracheotomy.

Rotaxane dendrimers with hyperbranched macromolecular interlocked structures and size modulation capacity demonstrate drug binding and release ability upon external stimuli. Mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) can offer the high-throughput screening of endogenous/exogenous compounds. Herein, we reported a novel method to display the in situ spatial distribution of label-free monodispersed type III rotaxane dendrimers (RDs) G1 (first generation, size ∼1.5 nm) and G2 (second generation, size ∼5 nm) that were explored as potential drug vehicles in spleen tissue by using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization imaging mass spectrometry (MALDI-MSI). Experimental results indicated that the trans-2-[3-(4-tert-butylphenyl)-2-methyl-2-propenylidene]malononitrile (DCTB) matrix exhibited the best performance for monodispersed type III RDs G1 and G2. The optimized method was successfully applied to map the in vivo spatial distribution of type III RDs G1 and G2 in the spleen from intraperitoneally injected mice. The MALDI-MSI images revealed that RDs G1 and G2 were relatively stable in the spleen within 24 h after administration. It was found that the identified type III RDs G1 and G2 penetrated through the tunica serosa and were predominantly localized in red pulp regions of spleens. They were also mapped in a marginal zone of spleens simultaneously. There was almost no toxicity of type III RDs G1 and G2 to mice spleens from the H&E results. Furthermore, the type III RDs did not induce the expression of inflammatory cytokines from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) or THP-1 monocytes. The MSI analysis not only demonstrated its ability to image select rotaxane dendrimers in a rapid and efficient manner but also provided tremendous assistance on the applications of the further treatment of cancerous tissue as safe drug carriers. Furthermore, the new strategy demonstrated in this study could be applied on other label-free mechanically interlocked molecules, molecular machines, and macromolecules, which opened a new path to evaluate the toxicological and pharmacokinetic characteristics of these novel materials at the suborgan level.

RATIONALE: Cavernous hemangiomas are benign vascular malformations that usually involve the skin, subcutaneous tissue, and liver. Described herein was multiple masses in the lung and liver mimicking metastasis, which was proved to be cavernous hemangiomas histologically. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 78-year-old man with complaint of dizziness for 3 days was referred to the local hospital for medical attention. DIAGNOSES: Multiple masses in the lung and liver was diagnosed pathologically as cavernous hemangioma. INTERVENTIONS: Because of the benign pathological characteristic and multiple distribution, no treatment except some symptomatic treatment for dizziness was administered. OUTCOME: After more than 2 years of follow-up visits, the patient had no apparent symptoms and was healthy. LESSONS: Proper diagnosis of multiple cavernous hemangiomas is essential. The final diagnosis depends on the pathology results. The most appropriate management is follow-up. Surgical treatment is suitable for large or symptomatic lesions which can result in satisfactory prognoses.

OBJECTIVE: To differentiate patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions from the high-risk population for preliminary screening of esophageal cancer using a feature index determined by a computer-aided tongue information acquisition and processing system (DS01-B). METHODS: Totally, 213 patients diagnosed with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions and 2,840 normal subjects were collected including primarily screened and reexamined, all of them were confirmed with histological examinations. Their tongue color space values and manifestation features were extracted by DS01-B and analyzed. Firstly, the analysis of variance was performed to differentiate normal subjects from patients with esophageal cancer and premalignant lesions. Secondly, the logistic regression was conducted using 10 features and gender, age to get a predictive equation of the possibility of esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions. Lastly, the equation was tested by subjects undergoing primary screening. RESULTS: Saturation (S) values in the HSV color space showed significant differences between patients with esophageal cancer and normal subjects or those with mild atypical hyperplasia (P<0.05); blue-to-yellow (b) values in the Lab color space showed significant differences between patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions and normal subjects (P<0.05). Logistic regression analysis showed that the computer-aided tongue inspection approach had an accuracy of 72.3% (2008/2776) in identifying patients with esophageal cancer or premalignant lesions for preliminary screening in high-risk population. CONCLUSION: Computer-aided tongue inspection, with descriptive and quantitative profile as described in this study, could be applied as a cost- and timeefficient, non-invasive approach for preliminary screening of esophageal cancer in high-risk population.

Cytisine is a quinolizidine alkaloid, which has been reported to be among the major bioactive components of Sophora alopecuraides L. Quinolizidine alkaloids have previously been demonstrated to inhibit the proliferation of several types of tumor cells. However, few studies have investigated the effects of cytisine on cancer cells. The present study was performed to further investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying cytisine­induced apoptosis of HepG2 human hepatocellular carcinoma cells. The results of an MTT assay demonstrated that cytisine inhibited the growth of HepG2 cells in a dose­dependent manner. In addition, the induction of apoptosis was detected, as determined by morphological observation and flow cytometry. As determined by fluorescence microscopy, apoptotic morphological alterations were detected following cytisine administration. Flow cytometric analyses demonstrated that cytisine induced cytotoxicity through apoptosis­like mechanisms in HepG2 cells. Furthermore, western blot analysis was performed to investigate the release of cytochrome c (Cyt­c) and activation of the caspase cascade, and the results indicated that treatment of HepG2 cells with cytisine induced caspase­dependent apoptosis via the release of Cyt­c from the mitochondria, upregulation of caspase­3 and downregulation of pro­caspase­3. These results indicated that cytisine may induce apoptosis of HepG2 cells through the mitochondrial pathway.

Azole fungicides have been reported to be accumulated in fish tissue. In this study, a sensitive and robust method using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry combined with ultrasonic extraction, solid-liquid clean-up, liquid-liquid extraction and solid-phase extraction (SPE) for enrichment and purification have been proposed for determination of azole fungicides in fish muscle samples. According to the results of non-statistical analysis and statistical analysis, ethyl acetate, primary secondary amine (PSA) and mixed-mode cation exchange cartridge (MCX) were confirmed as the best extraction solvent, clean-up sorbent and SPE cartridge, respectively. The satisfied recoveries (81.7-104%) and matrix effects (-6.34-7.16%), both corrected by internal standards, were performed in various species of fish muscle matrices. Method quantification limits of all azoles were in the range of 0.07-2.83ng/g. This optimized method was successfully applied for determination of the target analytes in muscle samples of field fish from Beijiang River and its tributaries. Three azole fungicides including climbazole, clotrimazole and carbendazim were detected at ppb levels in fish muscle tissues. Therefore, this analytical method is practical and suitable for further clarifying the contamination profiles of azole fungicides in wild fish species.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms in DNA repair genes can alter an individual's DNA repair capability and contribute to the risk of various cancers. AIMS: This study was designed to evaluate the association of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the XPG gene with the risk of gastric cardia adenocarcinoma (GCA) in a high-incidence population in northern China. METHODS: Two SNPs from 431 GCA patients and 432 healthy controls were genotyped using the polymerase chain reaction/ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) method. RESULTS: The rs751402 C/T SNP T allele and the T/T genotype were associated with an increased risk of GCA in younger individuals (≤61 years) (odds ratio [OR] = 1.33 and 1.77, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.00-1.76 and 1.12-3.30, respectively). The rs873601 G/A SNP was not associated with susceptibility to GCA. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that the rs751402 C/T SNP has potential as a predictive marker for the risk of GCA and that carriers of the T/T genotype should receive periodic upper gastrointestinal fiber tests to facilitate the early detection and early treatment of GCA.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of remifentanil and dexmedetomidine on recovery period after oral and maxillofacial surgery. METHODS: Sixty cases undergoing oral and maxillofacial surgery were randomly divided into 3 groups, including remifentanil group (group R), dexmedetomidine group (group D) and normal saline group (group C). Ten minutes before the end of surgery, the patients were given target control infusion of remifentanil at effect-site concentration of 1.5 ng/mL in group R or dexmedetomidine 0.5 µg/kg in group D or normal saline in group C, respectively. The haemodynamic parameters, Ramsay scales, coughing, agitation were recorded. Extubation time and incidence of adverse events were observed as well. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS20.0 software package. RESULTS: The mean arterial pressure and heart rate at the time of extubation were significantly lower in group D and group R than those in group C (P<0.05). The Ramsay scores were significantly better in group D and group R than in group C at the time point of 5 minutes and 10 minutes after extubation , and the score in group D was better than in group R at the same time (P<0.05). The incidences of coughing and agitation were significantly lower in group D and group R than in group C (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in extubation time. CONCLUSIONS: Dexmedetomidine and remifentanil can reduce the haemodynamic responsiveness, coughing and agitation during the recovery period of oral and maxillofacial surgery without extending the extubation time. Dexmedetomidine can provide longer sedation time than TCI of remifentanil.

PURPOSE: There are no global screening recommendations for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Endoscopic screening has been investigated in areas of high incidence in China since the 1970s. This study aimed to evaluate whether an endoscopic screening and intervention program could reduce mortality caused by ESCC. METHODS: Residents age 40 to 69 years were recruited from communities with high rates of ESCC. Fourteen villages were selected as the intervention communities. Ten villages not geographically adjacent to intervention villages were selected for comparison. Participants in the intervention group were screened once by endoscopy with Lugol's iodine staining, and those with dysplasia or occult cancer were treated. All intervention participants and a sample consisting of one tenth of the control group completed questionnaires. We compared cumulative ESCC incidence and mortality between the two groups. RESULTS: Three thousand three hundred nineteen volunteers (48.62%) from an eligible population of 6,827 were screened in the intervention group. Seven hundred ninety-seven volunteers from an eligible population of 6,200 in the control group were interviewed. Six hundred fifty-two incident and 542 fatal ESCCs were identified during the 10-year follow-up. A reduction in cumulative mortality in the intervention group versus the control group was apparent (3.35% v 5.05%, respectively; P < .001). Furthermore, the intervention group had a significantly lower cumulative incidence of ESCC versus the control group (4.17% v 5.92%, respectively; P < .001). CONCLUSION: We showed that endoscopic screening and intervention significantly reduced mortality caused by esophageal cancer. Detection and treatment of preneoplastic lesions also led to a reduction in the incidence of this highly fatal cancer.

PURPOSE: To observe and analyze the preventive effect of dexmedetomidine on postoperative delirium in elderly patients with oral cancer. METHODS: One hundred and fifty-six elderly patients with oral cancer who received radical surgery under general anesthesia were studied. They were randomly divided into 2 groups: experimental group (n=78) and control group (n=78). All patients stayed in PACU for 2 hours after surgery, and then were transferred to SICU when they had waken up. Subsequently, patients in experimental group were assigned to take intravenous dexmedetomidine at a dose of 0.2 µg/kg.h for 12 hours while patients in control group were assigned to take intravenous normal saline for 12 hours. All patients were given compound analgesia consisted of tramadol and tropisetron in the same dose. During the first three postoperative days, patients were evaluated with the Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU), Visual Analogue Scale and Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale twice a day(8:00 am and 8:00 pm). Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS16.0 software package. RESULTS: There was no significant difference on postoperative VAS, the incidence of postoperative bradycardia and hypotension between 2 groups. In addition, no postoperative respiratory depression was found in 2 groups. Richmond Agitation Sedation Scale on the first and second day after surgery in the experimental group was better than in the control group. The incidence of postoperative delirium, nausea and vomiting in the experimental group was lower than in the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous dexmedetomidine at a dose of 0.2 µg/kg.h for 12 hours after operation in elderly patients with oral cancer can ameliorate postoperative sedation status, reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium, and will not cause postoperative bradycardia, hypotension and other complications.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the cardioprotective effect and its mechanism of total saponins of Panacis Majoris Rhizoma in myocardial infarction (MI) rats. METHODS: The MI model rats induced by ligating anterior descending branch of coronary artery were randomly divided into four group:model group, total saponins of Panacis Majoris Rhizoma (100 and 200 mg/kg) groups and compound Danshen dripping pills group. The rats were orally administrated with drugs once a day for four weeks. Another rats were selected as sham operation group. After four weeks intervention, cardiac function was examined, the serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-8 were measured by using ELISA, respectively. The myocardial hypertrophy index was investigated, the myocardial infarct size, degree of ventricular dilatation, myocardial interstitial collagen volume fraction and tissue morphology were investigated by HE, Masson, picric acid-sirius red staining and observing with alight microscope and electron microscope. Protein expressions of phosphorylation IκB-α( pIκB-α) and NF-κB p65 in heart tissue were detected by Western blotting. RESULTS: Total saponins of Panacis Majoris Rhizoma might significantly decrease the levels of serum TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6 and IL-8; decrease myocardial hypertrophy indexes, myocardial infarct size, degree of ventricular dilatation and myocardial interstitial collagen volume fraction; improve heart tissue morphology and cardiac function; downregulate protein expression of pIκB-α and NF-κBp65; and upregulate protein expression of SIRT1. The aforementioned action effects of total saponins of Panacis Majoris Rhizoma (200 mg/kg) were similar with compound Danshen dripping pills. CONCLUSION: Total saponins of Panacis Majoris Rhizoma possesses cardioprotective effect against ligating left anterior descending branch induced MI in rats. The mechanism may be related to strengthening SIRT1 expression, inhibiting the phosphorylation of IκB-α, and finally inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and proinflammatory production.

PURPOSE: To compare the safety and efficacy of sedation induced by dexmedetomidine and propofol after oral and maxillofacial surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this trial, 66 patients 18 to 50 years old received oral and maxillofacial surgery and required postoperative nasal endotracheal intubation under overnight sedation with dexmedetomidine or propofol. The dexmedetomidine group (group D) received dexmedetomidine 1.0 µg/kg intravenously for 10 minutes after entering the recovery room. The dose was maintained by giving an intravenous injection of dexmedetomidine 0.4 µg/kg. The injection rate could be modulated from 0.2 to 0.7 µg/kg/hour in the intensive care unit (ICU). If the Ramsay score was lower than 2 and involuntary limb movement occurred, other sedatives were used. The propofol group (group P) was given propofol 0.1 mg/kg intravenously for 10 minutes after entering the recovery room and then maintained with intravenous injections of propofol 1 to 2 mg/kg/hour in the recovery room and ICU. RESULTS: The oxygen desaturation of group P was higher than that of group D (at the first sedation time of 30 minutes), but the mean blood pressure of group P was significantly lower than that of group D at the 10-minute time point. The Ramsay score was higher in group D after the first 3 hours of sedation than in group P (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Dexmedetomidine showed similar safety and efficacy as propofol and could be used for tube-retaining sedation after oral and maxillofacial surgery.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The miR-196a2 gene contains a C/T polymorphism (rs11614913). Its presence could change the conformation of secondary structure of miR-196a2 RNA, and directly affect the binding to target mRNAs and the miRNA maturation process. Both of which eventually alter protein expression and contributed to cancer susceptibility. This study assessed whether the rs11614913 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) could affect an individual's susceptibility to esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCC). METHODS: SNP rs11614913 was genotyped by polymerase chain reaction ligase detection reaction (PCR-LDR) in 597 ESCC patients and 597 control subjects. RESULTS: Overall, there were no significant differences in the frequency of the miRNA-196a2 SNP rs11614913 genotype between the ESCC cases and the controls (χ(2) = 1.395, p = 0.498). The TT genotype, CT genotype and CT/TT combined genotype (dominant model) did not modify the risk of ESCC as compared with the CC genotype. Comparisons of the TT genotype to the CT/CC combined genotype did not reveal a significant association to ESCC, too. However, further analyses revealed an increased risk of ESCC in the dominant model (OR = 1.56, 95% CI = 1.08-2.26) and the allele frequency comparison (OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.06-1.63) in the ≤60-year-old group. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the miRNA-196a2 functional polymorphism rs11614913 might be an effective genetic marker for ESCC risk assessment in individuals younger than 60 years of age from a region of high ESCC incidence in northern China.

Natural and synthetic steroid hormones such as progesterone and norgestrel in the aquatic environment may cause adverse effects on aquatic organisms. This study investigated the biotransformation of progesterone and norgestrel in aqueous solutions by two freshwater microalgae Scenedesmus obliquus and Chlorella pyrenoidosa and elucidated their transformation mechanisms. More than 95% of progesterone was transformed by the two microalgae within 5d. For norgestrel, almost complete transformation by S. obliquus was observed after 5 d, but nearly 40% was remained when incubated with C. pyrenoidosa. The results also showed that these two compounds were not accumulated in the algal cells. Biotransformation was found to be the main mechanism for their loss in the aqueous solutions, and it followed the first-order kinetic model. For progesterone, three main transformation products, i.e. 3ß-hydroxy-5α-pregnan-20-one, 3,20-allopregnanedione and 1,4-pregnadiene-3,20-dione, and six minor androgens were identified. For norgestrel, only two transformation products, 4,5-dihydronorgestrel and 6,7-dehydronorgestrel, were identified for the first time. Hydroxylation, reduction and oxidation are proposed to be the main transformation pathways. Among the two microalgae species, S. obliquus was found more efficient in the transformation of the two target compounds than C. pyrenoidosa. The results clearly demonstrated the capability of the two microalgae to transform the two progestogens. The biotransformation and products could have significant environmental implications in the fate and effects of the two steroids.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the diagnostic value of (18)F-FDG PET/CT with contrast CT for regional lymph node metastasis of colorectal cancer. METHODS: Imaging results of 40 patients with colorectal cancer were retrospectively reviewed, and all the patients underwent both abdomen contrast CT and (18)F-FDG PET/CT imaging. Final diagnosis was made by histopathology. RESULTS: 20 colorectal cancer patients were verified with lymph node metastasis while the other 20 patients were absent. Finally, (18)F-FDG PET/CT produced 4 false-positive patients and 3 false-negative patients. (18)F-FDG PET/CT displayed sensitivity 85.0% (17/20), specificity 80.0% (16/20), positive predictive value 81.0% (17/21), negative predictive value 84.2% (16/19) and accuracy 82.5% (33/40) in the diagnosis of lymph node metastasis. Contrast CT produced 5 false-positive patients and 8 false-negative patients. Contrast CT had the sensitivity 60.0% (12/20), specificity 75.0% (15/20) , positive predictive value 70.6% (12/17), negative predictive value 65.2% (15/23) and accuracy 67.5% (27/40). Sensitivity and specificity of PET/CT was better than of contrast CT, but no statistically significant difference between PET/CT and contrast CT (P = 0.478, P = 0.893; P = 0.344. Fisher's exact test and McNemar test). CONCLUSION: Sensitivity and specificity of PET/CT was better than of contrast CT, but no statistically significant difference. Clinical works also need to select the appropriate inspection methods based on the patient's situation.

The triacylglycerol (TAG) composition of ostrich oil (Struthio camelus) was determined by non-aqueous reversed-phase ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Using a column with 150 mm in length, the TAGs were separated efficiently with acetonitrile/2-propanol gradient at flow rate of 0.2 mL/min for 20 min. Detection is performed by positive APCI mass spectrometry, accurate mass measurements (<3 ppm) and definite elemental composition for molecular ions and fragment ions were obtained to enable characterisation of 24 TAGs in both ostrich oil and emu oil. In terms of TAGs composition and contents, the ostrich oils are similar to emu oils. This result indicates that the ostrich oil could be a good choice of substitution for emu oil, which is expensive and comparatively rare, in food, dietetics and cosmetics industry.
